Variations on a Ballet Bun

Thought you'd enjoy some inspirations for a nice ballet bun.

The keys to a successful ballet bun:
-follow the dance studio dress code
-make it TIGHT! It has to be secure for full-out dancing.
-sleek...if it's sloppy, redo it
-classy...make it a classic look, as to not distract you from focusing on your class

Having a great ballet bun is a MUST, but don't feel limited! You can give it personal flare by changing the height: high, low, middle. Give it a part: side part, sleek back, etc. Or even some personality: ribbon bow, braided bun, side braid.

Most importantly make it dance-class appropriate so you can get fully engaged into your class.

Antonio Carmena: Born & raised in Madrid, Spain.

Male soloist for the New York City Ballet. Featured in Balanchine's The Nutcracker (Soldier

& Chinese Tea), Jewels (Emeralds), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Oberon), Symphony in C (3rd

Movement), Jerome Robbins: The Four Seasons (Winter & Fall), Peter Martins: The Sleeping Beauty (Bluebird), Swan Lake (Benno), & many more. (Too many incredible ballets and credits to list.) In 1997 he was awarded, top honors at the Prix de Lausanne.

Michael Pereira: Studied the Fosse style jazz with Tony Award Winner Ann Reinking; assisted her in the creative process of reviving Brodway's CHICAGO. Personal dance coach for Broadway Star, Debbie Gibson. Directed/choreographed productions of "PIPPIN", "OLIVER", "SEUSSICAL", & many more. They are his highest heel to date!!

"Designed with the ballerinas in mind, the super thin spike heel is one that only the most professional dancers would be able to wear with ease," his rep explains. Louboutin's inspiration came from his recent visit to the ballet. These history-making shoes were auctioned off to charity last week which benefited The English National Ballet.

Casting female dancers (jazz/hip hop preferred) for a shoot for Seventeen Magazine with actress Heather Morris from Glee.

The girls will be in the fashion shoot with her dancing.

Age we are looking for is 16-20 who look on brand for Seventeen Magazine.

The shoot is in an LA studio this Saturday and is unpaid, but great exposure.

Princess Camp!

Our annual Princess Camps are so much fun. Our dancers experience a week in the life of Disney Princesses, and finish the camp off with a beautiful performance. They did such a fantastic job this year, and our classroom assistants were also great helpers. Dance Recital Stage Make Up

ITEMS YOU WILL NEED

Here is a checklist of the make up you need:

Foundation - match up to childs skin colour/tone (especially for older ones)
Face Powder - for all ages
Large Brush
Rouge/Blusher - pink
Eyeshadows - dark brown, mocha, white highlighter,
Black Eyeliner - liquid or pencil
White Eyeliner
Mascara - Black
Lipstick - red and/or pink (make sure it pops!!)
Lipliner - matching lipstick color
Make-up remover tissues

When choosing foundation, take your child along with you. Try several colours/brands until you find one that matches their skin when blended in and doesn't leave a definite line between makeup and skin, if it does, its probably too dark and needs to be lighter. You don't need to go for very expensive brands at this stage.

Makeup Train Case

You will need a makeup case or box to keep it in and to take it all to the dance performances for any last minute touch ups. You can find any bag or bog at Wal Mart, Target, CVS, etc. A popular option and cheap alternative to expensive makeup boxes is a fishing tackle box. A new one of course!! They have a good clasp, 2 or 3 trays with lots of compartments to separate lipsticks from shadows, mascara, glitter, etc. Use the bottom for bits and pieces like hair nets, bobby pins, etc. Give your child the enjoyable job of decorating it with glitter and stickers.

To remove stage make-up you will need a packet of make-up remover tissues. You may need to use 2 or 3 to completely clean the face.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY MAKE UP:

Apply foundation. First dot the foundation over the face. Gently with circular motions, rub the foundation into the skin, making sure all the face is covered, including nose and eyelids. Blend it well into the skin around the hair and jaw line so you don't see a line where the make-up starts. You can apply foundation with your first 2 fingers, or a make-up sponge, dampen very slightly, still apply first to the face and then use the sponge to blend in. With time and practice you will develop a preference.

Face powder. After foundation, brush the face powder all over the face. Then, taking tissue, gently brush off any excess face powder. This will help set the foundation and avoid shiny faces on stage, especially noticeable under bright stage lights.

Blush. A powder blusher with a brush is best. One way is to ask the child to suck their cheeks in "like a FISH!", that way highlighting the cheek bone. Brush the blusher from the cheek bone near the ear, running along the bottom edge of the bone (feel it with your fingers) to end just before the bone ends. Blend in slightly.

Eye Shadow. Good eye make up will bring a face to life on stage. Brown and white, looks best on stage; you can always find a nice shimmery brown to add a bit of sparkle. Have the child close their eyes, gently closed, not scrunched as this causes lines. Applying the darker of the two colours on the bottom half of the lid, using an eyeshadow applicator. Use smooth strokes starting at the inside corner of the eye, moving out to the edge. Blend this eyeshadow out and up to the end of the eyebrow. On the top part of the lid, apply the highlighter/white shade of eyeshadow, directly across the browbone, underneath the eyebrow - this will enhance the eyebrows on stage. Use the highlighter to sweep across the bottom of the eye lid, right above the lashes, under the brown eyeshadow.

Applying Black eyeliner to the top lid, along the line of eyelashes, as close to the lashes as possible.

If you are putting on false eyelashes, this is the stage to apply them. The best type are the ones you apply a thin layer of adhesive to the false lash and then gently, starting from the inside corner of the eye, press down as close to the root of the eye lash as possible, pressing along the line to the end. Do not apply glue directly to the eye. Open the eye straight away. Adjust to get a straight line.

Mascara. You will need a black mascara. Apply it from the base of the lashes all the way to the end. 2 coats of maskara is necessary.

Lips. Normally a bright red lipstick is used, especially on stage to show up the lips to the fullest. First apply lip liner, smudging it inward so the lip is almost filled with lip liner. Do not apply outside of the lip area. Apply lipstick first along the outline of the mouth, then fill in all the lips.

Tips. If you get black eyeliner, mascara or lipstick smudged on the skin or eyes, do not try to rub it off, that will only make a bigger mess. Using a Q tip, dip it into the foundation and dab onto the smudge until it is completely covered. Leave it to dry and apply another coat of foundation or eyeshadow over the top.

The full stage makeup, finished. Although at first it may feel like it takes a long time to do, you will soon become used to applying stage makeup for kids quickly.

Lights, Camera, Action!!

Recital DVD's of both performances can be ordered in advance, and will be delivered to the dance studio for pick up. Professional group photos of each dance will be taken during dress rehearsals - full make up and costume mandatory.

You can take as many photos or video during dress rehearsals as you'd like! This is the perfect time to get everything on camera. We run the full dances, just like in the recital. Please, NO flash photography, as it is unsafe for those on stage.

During the real showtimes on Saturday & Sunday, there is NO PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEO allowed at all! People who are taking photos/video during the show will be asked to stop, and potentially removed from the auditorium.

Flowers - pre-made bouquets of flowers will be available for sale at the recital; first come first serve. For those who pre-ordered your bouquets, you will be able to pick them up the day of.

RECITAL: How to do a Proper Ballet Bun!

What You Need:

Hair brush with nylon or natural bristles that are close together
Thick covered hair elastic (matching hair color)
Nylon hair net (matching hair color - these are like "lunch lady" hair nets; can be bought at local drug stores like CVS or WallGreens)
"U" shape hair pins & "regular" bobby pins (matching hair color)
Hair spray
Hair gel

How to Make a Bun:

Brush hair smooth and free of tangles. You may also want to wet hair with water avoid stray hairs and bumps.
Apply hair gel to wet or dry hair on the top, sides and underneath of hair. This will help avoid bumps and stray hairs.
Pull hair back neatly into a ponytail at the back of the head or higher, using a brush to avoid "lumps and bumps." A tidy ponytail with hair drawn snugly back is the key to making a good ballet bun. Placement of your ponytail determines placement of your bun. Ballet buns should be at the middle of the head or higher. For low buns place ponytail at the nape of the neck.
Secure ponytail tightly with hair elastic. For thick hair use two elastics.
Use hairspray to eliminate any "whisps" around the head, smoothing any remaining bumps of hair on the head.
Twist the ponytail as you gradually wrap it around the hair elastic, creating a tight, coiled circle, inserting the U shaped hair pins as you wrap. Be sure that your hair pins contain hair from both the head and the ponytail. This will hold your bun close to your head. Be sure to use plenty of hair pins (12-16 on average).The idea is to have your bun tightly coiled around your elastic and secured to your head.
Once you have created your bun, wrap your hair net around it as many times as it will allow for a snug fit.
Secure the hair net in place with bobby pins.
Spray entire head with hair spray to control stray hairs.

Hint - PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! It's takes practice to become good at anything, so you should practice doing a ballet bun for your dancer several times before the recital. We want this day to be extra special for your dancer, and this practice will help it be memorable and stress free.

Recital Dance Bag Check List...

Recital can be hectic, don't wait until the day before the performance to check your costumes. If your costume comes with a lot of small pieces, pin each individual piece to the costume so they don't get lost in a bag or mixed up with someone else's costumes. Use our handy recital check list to be certain you have everything for your special day.

Costumes:

Double check you have all your costumes and any accessory pieces. If you're in more than one dance, a garment bag is very handy to keep all your costumes organized. Don't forget to put your name in all your costume pieces.

Dance Shoes:

Make sure your shoes are clean and in good repair before the show. Place your name inside all your shoes.

Tights:

Check to make sure you have the right color, brand and size of tights for each dance you will be performing in. It is a good idea to have an extra pair of tights in case of runs.

Make-up Essentials:

Keep your make-up nice and neat by placing all of the essential items in a separate bag or caboodle.

Whether you're a Tweeter or not, this is significant reason to be excited! Antonio Carmena (male soloist for the NYC Ballet), AND Ashley Bouder (female Principal Dancer for the NYC Ballet) both mentioned Capistrano Dance on their personal Twitter pages!! We are hugely thrilled; thanks for including us, Ashley.

Bio. Information (from Huffington Post): Ashley Bouder was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and began her ballet training at the age of six at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet with Marcia Dale Weary. After attending the 1999 Summer Program at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, she was invited by SAB to continue her training during the Winter Session. As a student, Ms. Bouder performed featured roles in Balanchine's Dances Concertantes and Stars and Stripes for the School of American Ballet's 2000 Annual Spring Workshop. Ms. Bouder was named an apprentice with New York City Ballet in June 2000 and became a member of the corps de ballet that October. She was promoted to the rank of soloist in February 2004, and in January 2005, Ms. Bouder was promoted to principal dancer.

In March we went to Starpower Dance Competition in San Diego, CA, where our teams performed marvelously, and got rewarded for it!

Brandon Minnich (one of our dedicated team brothers), and Noel Mircovich submitted their pictures from the event, and we selected some of our favorites for the blog. To be a part of the Capistrano Academy of Dance Competition Teams, come out and audition on May 21 & 22, 2011 at the studio! Lyrical Hip Hop coming to CAD!!

This year we added acro-jazz/tumbling, modern and advanced jazz classes to our studio's schedule. These classes have filled up, and had beautiful pieces turned out. We are so excited about the classes Miss Lacey and Mr. Will have been teaching in these genres.

We are THRILLED to bring a whole new genre of dance to our studio this coming fall (Sept. 2011)! "Lyrical Hip Hop" taught by Miss Sara. Be sure to get your teens signed up for this fantastic class. What is lyrical hip hop? Watch these video examples of some great lyrical hip hop pieces. (These video examples are partner dances, but we will be working on group pieces in class). Enjoy and be inspired!
